Instead of treating the molars and extracting one, or at most two teeth as we were led to expect, we were informed only after the procedure that they were unable to save the teeth and had extracted five teeth. We never gave consent for the removal of five teeth. At the very least, we should have been informed before the procedure and given the opportunity to discuss the situation, especially since my husband was present at the clinic. My child has been unable to eat properly for three days and looked and felt terrible after the surgery. I consider this completely unacceptable treatment of a child. The lack of communication and informed consent was highly unprofessional and very disappointing.

We visited Growing Smiles Pediatric Dentistry - Garner Station for the first time for an exam, cleaning, and treatment for our three children. Overall, the first visit went well: the staff was friendly and patient, and our kids felt comfortable and liked it. On the same day, our older son and daughter had dental treatment. After the treatment, my daughter felt unwell. She was extremely sleepy, which is not typical for her, was “zoning out,” and had noticeable swelling. We were close to going to the hospital, but by around 9 PM she gradually started returning to normal. We assumed it might have been a reaction to the gas used during the procedure, since in a previous clinic (in another state) her teeth were treated without gas, only oxygen, and she had no issues. At the next appointment, we asked not to use gas and explained what had happened. We were told that such reactions can occur, but they typically use gas for all children, and if we wanted treatment without it, we would need a note from our family doctor. This was surprising to us, since we had previously treated her without gas and without any note. We were even ready to look for another clinic, but they eventually agreed to proceed without gas. During treatment, my husband noticed that gas was being administered anyway. He asked them to turn it off. They replied that it was “just a little to help her relax,” even though she was calm and watching cartoons. This happened several times, and my husband had to stop them each time. We also felt there was very little communication with the child during treatment, and the atmosphere seemed tense. After the visit, our daughter said she did not want to go back because she was scared when “big scissors” were brought near her mouth. After the second treatment, she was slightly sleepy but did not feel nauseous and did not experience the same severe symptoms. We later consulted with our family doctor, who confirmed that such reactions to gas are possible and that parents should decide whether it is used. Unfortunately, because of this experience, we cannot recommend this clinic. We were not satisfied with how our concerns were handled and the communication during our child’s treatment.

We LOVE Growing Smiles Pediatric Dentistry in Garner and Dr. Jani. My daughter doesn’t do well with dental procedures and has severe anxiety. Dr. Jani and her team have always been kind and patient with her and have included her in her own care instead of talking only to me. I’m so glad we found this office!
